32 week update!

I went to see the doctor yesterday. Finally met the man doctor in the office. I wasn't too impressed. Here was the appointment... "Hi Pam! Looks like our ladies have been taking care of you." Me: "yup." Dr: "Okay, lets measure that belly... looks like you're growing!" Me: "Great!" Dr: "Let's have a listen to the heartbeat"..squeezes on the jelly... hears a quick thump, thump...thump, thump...thump, thump. "Sounds Great! Any questions?" That was the fastest appointment ever! I did have a couple of questions for him - I didn't let him get away that easily.

Gestational Diabetes... Do I have or do I not have? That is the question... At about 25 weeks, they had me take the 1 hour test and said I was a "little" out of range, so they scheduled me for the 3- hour. Many would say this test is awful, but thanks to Sonia at the blood clinic, it was a breeze... she is great at getting blood with 1 poke, and let me watch "The Notebook" on her portable DVD player while I waited. My numbers came back borderline, but they diagnosed me with GD and sent me to an endochronologist. She put me on a diet of 120 carbs per day, and gave me a monitoring system to prick my finger and check my blood sugars 4x per day. I've been on it for 4 weeks and it hasn't been nearly as bad as I thought. Thanks to doing weight watcher and atkins before - it's been a breeze. I'm doing great with the diet and my numbers are near perfect. Yesterday I went for my 3rd appointment with the endo. She had me take something called an "A1C" to take a reading of your blood sugar for the past 3 months... mine came back a 5.1. She said, "wow, a 5.1!" I asked "Is that good??" She said "under 6.5 is considered non-diabetic! I should have asked her what the heck I am doing there! But it has been a great learning experience - I feel very healthy and energetic on the diet and I've only gained 13 pounds during my pregnancy. Doctors are happy with how the baby is growing, so all is well... Their main concern with GD is that I will have a big baby, but the Dr said since my numbers are so great they will give me some slack with regard to inducing the baby early. Since we live a block away from the hospital, I envision going into labor naturally, waiting until contractions are pretty close together, and walking the block to the hospital to deliver. We'll see how well that works out.

More fun with childbirth classes. We have completed the first 3 classes. Last week we watched a video with 3 different types of births. The second couple was hilarious...they talked about having something to focus on during contractions aka a "focul point". The Mom is going into a tough contraction and he pulls out...... a picture of their CAT?! LOL I lost it again and couldn't stop laughing. I told Rafael if I'm in the middle of a contraction, he better not be pulling out a picture of our CAT. I love Nala and all... but she's the last thing I'll be thinking about during labor!! This weeks class was full of laughs again... if only I could keep Rafael awake during the entire class, we'd be set.

I get another Ultrasound next Friday! I can't wait to see how handsome my boy is getting.

My baby shower is next week and I'm SUPER excited. I have some awesome friends who are planning it for me. I'm a lucky girl :)
